Curriculum Overview

The District's curriculum program is based on consistent, standards-based materials delivered with fidelity by our skilled and caring teachers.

Every day in BRPS classrooms, we work toward our vision: "The Big Rapids Public Schools will provide our students unlimited opportunities to achieve their highest potential for lifelong success." As a District, this includes building an educational experience for students that has a strong foundation in core subjects, provides opportunities to discover personal passions and interests, develops competency in emerging technology, and helps students design an ethical compass so they can act as responsible, educated, contributing citizens.

Developing and maintaining a solid, standards-based core curriculum that aligns with state grade-level expectations is the District’s most basic requirement. Our Curriculum Council meets throughout the year to discuss current curriculum, new curriculum ideas, and the curriculum adoption cycle. They ensure that the instructional programs for the district are aligned to ensure success for all students.

Michigan Academic Standards

The State academic standards linked here serve to outline learning expectations for Michigan’s students and are intended to guide local curriculum development. They are used as a framework by schools for curriculum development with the curriculum itself prescribing instructional resources, methods, progressions, and additional knowledge valued by the local community. Furthermore, these standards provide a platform for State assessments, which are used to measure how well schools are providing opportunities for all students to learn the content outlined by the standards.
