At this week’s Board of Education meeting, Big Rapids Public Schools celebrated two significant milestones in the district: Sharon Schumann’s recognition as the 2024 SHAPE Michigan Health Education Teacher of the Year, and the announcement of Ken Ranjel as the incoming principal of Brookside Elementary School.
Sharon Schumann Honored for Excellence in Health Education
The Board recognized Sharon Schumann during Cardinal Pride, a highly respected health education teacher, for her exceptional dedication to student health and well-being. Recently named the 2024 Health Education Teacher of the Year by SHAPE Michigan, Schumann has made a lasting impact on her students through her engaging teaching style, commitment to health, and passion for educating young minds about lifelong wellness.
Ken Ranjel to Assume Brookside Elementary Principal Role
The Board also formally announced that Ken Ranjel will be taking on the role of principal at Brookside Elementary. Ranjel, currently a middle school teacher at Big Rapids, will succeed Kara Schafer, who has served as Brookside’s principal with dedication and care. Schafer, a well-loved member of the school community, plans to retire at the end of December, leaving a legacy of warmth, leadership, and student-centered focus.
Ranjel, known for his rapport with students and his deep commitment to fostering positive school culture, will work closely with Schafer through the remainder of 2024 to ensure a smooth transition. He will assume leadership officially in January 2025 and continue guiding Brookside through the end of the school year.
With Schumann’s recent recognition and Ranjel’s new leadership role, Big Rapids Public Schools celebrates the dedicated individuals who contribute to a vibrant and successful school community. The district looks forward to continued excellence and innovation in education.
